A wedding band is a ring exchanged during the celebration of marriage and is thereafter worn on the fourth finger of the left hand.
What do wedding bands symbolise?
Traditionally, a wedding band is made of plain metal formed into a continuous circle, symbolising eternal love and commitment. Of course, wedding rings today can be design-led and feature gemstones or patterning – there is no set rule.
On which finger should a wedding band be worn?
In most Western cultures, the wedding band is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, as historically, it was believed that this finger held the vein leading directly to the heart. The early Romans referred to this as the “Vena Amoris,” which translates to “vein of love.” Even though modern understanding of our anatomy proves there is no single vein as such, and instead all fingers have veins leading to the heart, the tradition still stands.
In which cultures is it common to wear a wedding band on the right hand?
Historically, it has been documented that wedding bands have been worn on all fingers, and in some cases, even thumbs! It is common for wedding bands to be worn on the fourth finger of the right hand in certain countries, including but not limited to: Germany, India, Russia and Spain.
Who should buy the wedding bands?
Traditionally, the couple buy their rings for one another.
How much money should you spend on a wedding band?
The amount you spend on a wedding band is a personal choice. Just remember that a wedding ring is intended to be worn daily, so choosing a durable metal and a design that suits your lifestyle is essential. It should be a piece that will stand the test of time.

What is the difference between an engagement ring and a wedding band?
The engagement ring is representative of the future promise to marry and is worn on the fourth finger of the recipient's left hand for the duration of the engagement period. Wedding bands are exchanged on the day of the wedding ceremony, and are typically worn by the bride and groom, representing their commitment to one another.
How do you wear an engagement ring and a wedding band together?
Usually, the wedding ring is placed on the finger first, closest to the heart, with the engagement ring stacked on top. If an eternity ring is also being worn, it can be placed on top of the stack so the engagement ring is sandwiched between the two. However, there are no set rules. For example, some people may find it uncomfortable to wear three rings on the same finger, so another popular choice is to wear the eternity band on the fourth finger of the right hand instead.
How tight should my wedding band be?
Your wedding band should be comfortable to wear. It should be relatively easy to slide over the knuckle when putting it on and offer a little resistance when taking it off. Your wedding band should never be too tight for you to remove.

How do you clean wedding bands at home?
Always start by filling a bowl with warm water. Do not be tempted to clean any jewellery under a tap of running water in case the article falls down the plughole! Add some washing-up liquid to the water and submerge the ring for around 10 minutes to allow any dirt to soften. Then, using a soft toothbrush, gently sweep across the piece, teasing out the loosened dirt particles. Refill the bowl with fresh water, rinse the article, then dry using a lint-free cloth.
