In view of this we encourage our customers to make sensible decisions about removing jewellery when performing chores or participating in activities which could cause damage, this is especially relevant to rings. When storing jewellery, try to keep items individually to prevent scratching. When cleaning jewellery, do so in a bowl of warm water mixed with a mild soap solution and if in doubt about the suitability of this method for your particular gemstone; contact our customer care team for advice. How can I clean my jewellery at home?
Always start by filling a bowl with warm water. Do not be tempted to clean any jewellery under a tap of running water in case the article falls down the plughole! Add some washing-up liquid to the water and submerge the piece for around 10 minutes to allow any dirt to soften. Then, using a soft toothbrush, gently sweep across the piece, teasing out the loosened dirt particles. Refill the bowl with fresh water, rinse the article, then dry using a lint-free cloth.
Important things to note:
- This is not recommended for pearls or porous gemstones such as opal, as these items should not be submerged in water. Instead, they should be gently wiped clean with a cloth, using warm water and a mild soap solution. Remove any residue with a separate, damp cloth and leave to dry completely.
- When cleaning earrings, it is best to remove any fittings first to allow easier access to the back of the earring.
- When cleaning bracelets, take care to allow the bracelet to maintain its natural shape.
- For pendants, if the piece is still attached to the chain, take care to make sure it does not become tangled.
How often should I have my jewellery cleaned or polished?
It is not recommended to polish your jewellery excessively. Each time an item is polished, a small amount of metal is removed. Over time, this can weaken claws, leading to the possibility of stones falling out.
What is the best way to store my jewellery?
When they are not being worn, try to store your pieces separately to avoid the items coming into contact and scratching each other, or chains becoming tangled.
How can I avoid damaging my jewellery?

When should I not wear my jewellery?

Also, be aware that the action of gripping something tightly, such as gym equipment, pushchairs and trolleys, can damage the underside of a ring. Some household detergents can be damaging to certain gemstones, as can chlorine and salt water, so be mindful when your jewellery is likely to come into contact with these substances.
