Diamonds, emeralds, rubies, and sapphires are considered the most valuable gemstones. Their worth is influenced by colour, clarity, cut, and carat weight - with rarity and quality playing a key role in determining price.

The four precious gemstones are diamond, emerald, sapphire, and ruby, due to their rarity and exceptional hardness, measured by the Mohs scale. Diamonds are the hardest, ranking at the very top, while sapphires and rubies follow closely at level nine.

Most gemstones form naturally over millions of years as minerals deep within the earth. Some, like diamonds and zircon, are brought to the surface by volcanic activity, while others, like topaz and tourmaline, crystallise slowly from hot fluids and gases.

The most reliable way to confirm a gemstone’s authenticity is through a certificate from a recognised gemological laboratory, such as the GIA. These certificates verify that the stone has been professionally tested and meets strict quality standards

For everyday wear, it’s best to choose durable gemstones with a Mohs hardness of 7 or above. Diamonds, sapphires, rubies, topaz, and quartz are all excellent options - they resist scratching and stand up well to daily life, making them ideal for long-lasting jewellery.

Clean your gemstones gently using warm water, mild detergent, and a soft brush. Avoid harsh chemicals or vigorous scrubbing, as this can damage the stone or its setting. To prevent scratches, store each piece separately in a soft-lined pouch or jewellery box.
